Classicist Max Schwartz was a versatile scholar, a passionate teacher, and an affable school principal. It was only fairly late in life, from 1951 on, that he began to publish translations of major Greek and Roman epic poets, such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, which are still being reprinted to this day. His style and approach show that he had a perfect feel for the modern era of reconstruction: he searched for and found a new audience that was interested in classical antiquity despite not having grown up with it.
